● Fire Insurance Maps show the built fabric of buildings including: changes in
building over time, materials of building, size of building (height,
width, and depth),types of buildings (commercial, manufacturing,
residential)
● Blocks are organized in atlases by ward number and sites are organized by lot
number.Use atlas to locate this information in order to request proper map
collection.
● These maps are available from the mid 1800s through present.
● NYPLMapWarper: The NYPL Map Warper is a tool for digitally aligning("rectifying")
historical maps from the NYPL's collections to match today's precise maps.
